Homestays w/families in Spain (Madrid & other Cities)

Homestays with families in Spain (Madrid and other cities)

Middle-class families in Madrid and elsewhere in Spain offer full board (free meals and accommodation) with your own room in the family's home. This offer only applies to Native English speakers from the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Most people who take advantage of this are typically under 30 years old. This is what families request.

Host families can't wait to have Native English Speakers over so they can practise English at home!

In exchange all you need to do is engage in conversational English for 1-2 hours every evening with the host family, Monday to Thursday. You can do your own thing during the day and Friday to Sunday!

Your deal is making sure the family engages in English for one hour per night Mon-Thurs, and for this you are getting full board and free accommodation with the family. I attach several pictures where you can see Americans with their hosts, they stayed in Spain the summer of 2013.

Important:
This is not a job I am offering, but a chance to come live in Spain for a few weeks or months and enjoy the Spanish lifestyle at its fullest.

This is an offer of accommodation with nice families who have already done this in the past and can't wait to practise English at home, with you.

You can earn some money by privately tutoring English outside the family, take Spanish lessons, visit the city or travel during the weekends -- this is totally up to you.

If you are interested or know someone who might be, please send me your resume/CV and I will contact you for an interview in Madrid or over Skype. Before you commit, I will put you in touch with the family (by email or videocall) so that you can find out more about them, making sure it's a good match.

References and testimonials upon request.

Homestays are a minimum of 1 month, and typically last for up to 3 months (Length is flexible)

There is an administration fee of Euro250, payable only once you are settled with the family in Spain. This fee is paid once (NOT per month).
Plane Ticket to Spain NOT included. You must pay for your own plane ticket to Spain.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

ESL CARNIVAL is currently exploring Las Vegas, Nevada.  We have been in the city of Las Vegas since early 2012 and have been returning a dozen times ever since.  Since the city is at current undergoing major changes in the old downtown section, we found it very interesting to document the changes to the old downtown strip and to incorporate that into our site.  In addition, ESL CARNIVAL will be undergoing a name change in 2014.  We will go from "ESL CARNIVAL" to "ESL CARNIVAL LAS VEGAS".  Las Vegas - The most exciting city in the world.  What a great town to have a chance to relocate to and to do great business in.  Keep coming back to our site to get the most recent updates to "ESL CARNIVAL LAS VEGAS!"

2012-2013
2013 is coming to a close and the warmth of the holidays is approaching.   I feel as though I've had plenty of time to reflect on 2012... It was an amazing year.  My goals were:

- Run a marathon every month
- Run a 50 miler
- Spread peace to everyone
- Grow stronger as a person

I ended up running 5 marathons, 4 50Ks, a 44 mile Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon, a 100K, and a 28 mile Quad Dipsea.  Every single race was unique in it's own way and provided me with a learning experience if viewed appropriately.  Starting with my first marathon in the Vibram Five Fingers in January and learning how to strengthen my feet and ankles for the next one in February, in which I was told the following day by my mother that I had placed 1st in my age group!  In March I made the dumbest mistake of 2012 and attempted to eat a 12-egg omelette with hash browns and muffins at Broken Yolk the day before the L.A. marathon.  April I had the chance to run in the canyons of Vegas where I again took 1st place in my age division, in May, I met some amazing people that I bonded with for life in the Grand Canyon, June I had my best marathon time of 2012 at the Rock' n Roll San Diego marathon.  In July I met an inspirational English teacher in the Modjeska Canyon, in August I suffered through 105 degree heat at Mt. Disappointment 50K, in September I ran with one of my very best friends on one of the most beautiful islands our planet has in her first marathon.  In October I ran for 100 for America, running the inaugural Cuyamaca 100K, in November I ran a race that I had been reading about for years and, most recently, I ran a snowy 50K with my brother, the best way to end the year.

I loved every minute of every race.  I loved meeting new people on the run, drinking beer on the run, traveling to races, staying with friends, re-living my first marathon, eating a vegan diet and H.U.M.ing in the woods!  Plus, every single race was ran in minimalist shoes!  Either VFFs or the Merrell Pace Glove, even in snow!  Although I didn't run a 50 miler, my 100K was 62 miles AND, I'm registered for a 50 miler in March.

As for spreading peace; while this wasn't a huge campaign with an action plan, I hope that I was able to affect people and beings in a positive manner.  In my daily interactions I use positivity and optimism over more negative emotions.  At work I stay away from gossip and bad feelings, focusing on progression.  With friends and family, I attempt to help them to live their lives healthy and happy.  It's very easy to fall into a trap of blaming others or the situation when we make those choices on a daily basis.

I also hosted 8 couch surfers over the year as well, the Chilean Miner is such a great place to stay that I actually had to change my profile to show that I'm not hosting right now.  It became difficult hosting with my training and racing schedule.  However, with the couch surfers that I did have, the cultural exchange was, as it always is, amazing.  I hosted two guys who finished their cross country bike tours in San Diego, sisters from Missouri, a Spaniard who I convinced needs to visit Poland, a Chilean medical student, a NYC born Jew living in Tel Aviv, and a first-time-on-my own boy from WA state.  They were all wonderful and we had some very fascinating conversations.  We all inspired and respected each other, forming peace in a sense.

In addition, I am very proud that my mother says that I'm perpetually happy and my boyfriend calls me 'Smiles for Miles'.  A smile and a cheery disposition can go a long way!

Have I grown?  I have two responses.

An ex once reminded me of a quote from the Bible stating: "Be content in all things." when I complained about a situation I was in.  I recently thought of that moment and knew that I am now content.  Not because I have more things, (I live frugally in a 34' boat), not because I make more money, :(, but because my life is richer.

Secondly, a friend of mine posted on facebook just this morning, "If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?"  I was stumped.  Could be because there are too many great places I'd like to be but also because I enjoy all of my surroundings.  At home in my boat or my boyfriend's boat, in my parents house in Illinois, watching a movie with my Dad, chilling with Couchsurfers, out with friends, traveling alone, traveling with friends, walking the dogs, etc.  Work I could do without but we all work regardless and I still love my job.

Therefore, I can't say if I've grown but I'm certainly in a good place!  :)

For 2013, I will be running two 50 milers, attempting my first 100 miler in the name of 100 for America, (we still need to work on supporting Made in America and keeping and building jobs in the US!) and a few more races in the fall.  Looking at the Chicago Marathon with TNT, perhaps the Cuyamaca 100K again or something else.  I will also be supporting a good friend of mine as Captain of the Ultra University team and helping to encourage others to go the extra mile, on foot and in their daily lives.

I am also currently actively seeking sponsors.  Perhaps Southwest Airlines, Merrell, Gu, INKnBURN, etc... Or if People's in Ocean Beach want to help me out by giving me a monthly stipend, that'd be nice too!  :)))))

I also have some other things going on in 2013.  I will be welcoming 2 new members to my immediate family.   It has been wonderful getting to know James and Jeremy and I cannot wait to have the opportunity to witness your marriages.  I'm so happy for EVERYONE involved.  Just the other day, I realized that I could count on both of you if I ever needed anything and I got emotional over it... Plus, I'm starting classes at the local community college this spring and am looking forward to learning more about the state of California.  AND, I'm going to visit a very best friend who is in the Peace Corps in Paraguay.

There is definitely a lot going on and I didn't even mention my love life!  Besides being able to depend on and  trust my boyfriend, I feel more respected than ever in my current relationship and I certainly hope it remains this way and continues to grow.  He was there during a lot of my races this year, even caught the bug (!), and  has been incredibly patient with me!  Thanks dear...

We have a long road ahead of us and I am confident that 2013 will be just as AMAZING.  Because I need to put a Star Trek plug in here and Gene Roddenberry had an amazing view of what he believed we can accomplish, I will end with a quote.

Live Long and Prosper

Elizabeth

Hostels: Where $ Budget = $ Experience!

Picture
If you’re someone who has never stayed in a hostel and the only thing you think of when you hear the word is the horror movie, I have news for you. Hostels are NOT scary!

I recently spent a week at a wonderful hostel in Toronto while attending a Travel Media Conference. It was my first time to Toronto, my second time in a hostel. For my first hostel stay, I booked a private room at the Ocean Island Inn/Backpackers/Suites in Victoria BC. I was on my first solo trip out of the country and I’d always wanted to stay in a hostel. At that time, I wasn’t sure if I was quite ready for the FULL “shared dorm room with 8 beds total” experience. I decided I wanted to take the plunge by dipping my toes in the water first, and then I could dive in later if I liked it. Needless to say, I LIKED IT!  I was now ready to dive into the deep end and get fully immersed.

The Clarence Park Hostel Website

Picture
For my week in Toronto, I knew I would be extremely busy from dawn to dusk (actually till WELL past dusk)! I basically needed a clean bed to crash into at night and a bathroom. I was on an extremely tight budget and wanted to stay in Toronto for as long as possible. I could spend a week in a shared, all female, 8 bed room (with our own bathroom) for less than the cost of 1 night in a decent hotel. It was $25 per night. The hostel had a HUGE kitchen for all the guests so I had access to a refrigerator, microwave, oven, coffee, filtered water, dishes, pots and pans and a well stocked pantry of staples. There were lounge areas, it was right next door to a bakery/cafe and right across the street from a little park. While there are MANY things I could tell you about why I love hostels, I decided to stick with my top 5. In no particular order, here they are:

1. Hostels are located in great areas. They are close to the city, attractions, and public transportation. This was very important to me as I would be arriving in Toronto via Megabus and using public transportation (and my feet) to get around the city and to my conference. My conference was a 15 minute walk from The Clarence Park Hostel.

2. Hostels are PERFECT for the Solo Traveler. As an older, married, female that travels often alone, safety is my #1 concern. You never feel isolated in a hostel and you are never really alone. They are very a friendly and social environment where everyone feels like family.

3. Sharing a dorm style room with 4 other girls is FUN! Every night felt like a slumber party as we shared our stories of what we did each day. My 4 roommates became fast friends and it wasn’t long before I felt like the den mother to these fabulous girls. 2 were from Ireland and on work visas, 1 was from England and attending the same conference I was, and the other from the Netherlands and in Toronto for a semester of school.

4. Hostels are NOT scary at all. They are actually just the opposite: FRIENDLY!  Everyone you meet in a hostel (from the staff to the guests) has a smile on their face and a helpful attitude.

5. Hostels aren’t just for Backpacking College Kids in Europe. While you will still see lots of guests that fall into this demographic, you will also see older retired couples, young families and older Solo female travelers. I will be 50 this year and have traveled my entire life. I have stayed in lodging that ranges from camping in a tent to sleeping in luxury resorts. I really don’t have a preference when it comes to type of lodging. For me, traveling is not about what size my bed is, the type of mattress or what the thread count of my sheets are. It’s about the PEOPLE I meet. The more friends I can make from the most different countries and cultures the better!  So, the next time you want to go to a new city and either can’t afford a decent hotel or just want a more diverse and budget friendly place to sleep, a hostel could be the best choice. You can do some research and actually book directly online at some of my favorite websites below:

http://www.hostelbookers.com
http://www.hiusa.org
http://www.hostelworld.com
http://www.tripadvisor.com (hostels are under lodging: specialty lodging)

Hostels are proof that you don’t always get what you pay for, sometimes you get MORE!

Summary: Mee, Myself & Eyes: A dissertation on Singaporean Cuisine

As I am writing this, I am indulging in my three Singapore addictions. I think I spend more money on these three foods than all my other culinary expenditures combined. I am sorry to report, however, that these foods are only interesting in how dull they are.
The first addiction is Lychee Drink, which is the name would imply, is made with the juice of the lychee. (Not much juice, though. After all, anything labeled "Fruit Drink" is usually composed mostly of water and a corn syrup). I buy at least a case of 24 eight-ounce boxes each week. The most interesting thing about Lychee drink is that, even if it were 100 percent juice, it would still taste as artificial as PET plastic. That is because fresh lychee fruits, right out of the leathery red peel, look, feel, and taste uncannily like something from a can. Furthermore, my initial investigations seem to indicate that the more expensive a variety of lychee is, the more it tastes like the weird peeled grape things from Del Monte fruit cocktail. (more)

Summary:     Woman Fulfills Dream with Stay in Shanghai

Every weekday at 6 p.m., Kitty McTyre faithfully clicked on the wooden Philco radio in the living room. Minutes later the smooth voice of travel correspondent Lowell Thomas swept her from Beckley to Buddhist temples where monks prayed and clashed cymbals.

For decades, McTyre replayed snippets of Thomas’s stories whenever China popped into her thoughts. But she longed to replace his experiences with her own.

Last year McTyre, now 60, did. From September of 1996 until June, she walked the bustling streets of Shanghai and got paid for it. The kindergarten teacher from Huntington’s Miller Elementary taught English to aspiring high school students who hoped to someday run Chinese businesses.

“It was a marvelous opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream,” McTyre said at her home in Huntington. “For a long time I had been very busy raising my family, (more)

As we continue to expand during our third year - we will be bringing online a new website which will suggest more interactive options independent of options available with our online TWITTER presence.  Our new website will allow our students, teachers and visitors to respond to short articles on travel advice, options and stories which make ESL Carnival truly a pre-travel destination for ESL workers abroad.  Also in 2013, ESL Carnival will have a special focus on language, travel, school and work opportunities in Paris, France.  To all of our non-native speakers & students of English - don’t forget to visit the Business English Word List I &II. In the meantime for questions or inclusion on topical material - please visit ESL Carnival on TWITTER or contact:
