On Thailand...

In the current day when the dollar bill doesn’t go as far as it used to and the Master’s is the new Bachelor’s Degree, people are opting to teach English as a Second Language overseas where their American degree and dollar holds more value. Countries such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Thailand are a few of the countries that offer teaching positions for native English Speakers. The average one year contract includes, free room & board, monthly salary, and free round trip. The appeal to teach overseas reaches people who have just received their bachelor’s degrees and are looking for a great experience for their resume, those looking for a lifestyle change, or those looking to travel the world at no expense to themselves. Many of those who finish their one year contract have such a wonderful experience, that some stay for several years or explore a different Country!
Finding the right location depends on what the individual is looking for. Those who are seeking adventure, music, great food, friendly people and an easy-to-learn native language may opt to teach in either Central or South America. For others interested in history and architecture, the newer markets in Eastern Europe might be inviting. For those interested in making a nice salary Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab emirates are appealing. In these countries the salaries are extremely generous (Teach English 1). One American USD converts to nearly four of the Saudi Arabia’s SAR.
Beginning an ESL teaching adventure doesn’t begin after an individual earns their Bachelor’s Degree. Most Universities overseas require a TEFL Certificate. Unlike the American one year training program most teachers have to take before they can teach their own class, the TEFL program ranges only from two weeks to one month. It also varies from traveling overseas to obtain the required certificate to receiving it in the states, or even online (TEFL 1). The price to obtain the TEFL certificate is a couple hundred bucks to thousands.
For those looking for a position overseas, they can teach anywhere from the kindergarten level or at the college level. Students majoring in English have learned the language from a young age, so there is no need to learn the language of the country you are teaching in. Some ESL positions may be more competitive and they may require a higher education than just a bachelor’s in countries such as Japan. In others countries, a bachelor’s is sufficient. Some Universities may institute a required lesson plan in a big city such as Shanghai or Bangkok. Other Universities may not offer a lesson plan which gives complete freedom to the teacher.
Teaching overseas is a two-in-one traveling and teaching deal. Depending on one’s taste, they might prefer living in a big city like Beijing. In Beijing, there are several foreigners passing through and many people to meet and others cultures to be introduced to besides the Chinese. If a prospect ESL teacher wants to submerge themselves in the culture they many love to teach near the beaches of Phuket, Thailand where they can enjoy a delicious meal in a beautiful restaurant for less than five USD. Although there are many options, teaching overseas is a life changing and beautiful adventure that one will have the gratification of providing education to students of a different culture.
